Social Networking Website Vulnerability

  • Published
Many of our Airmen are using social networking Web sites to communicate with each other and loved ones. While these sites are great for morale, they pose enormous OPSEC vulnerabilities when Airmen post things such as photos from the area of responsibility, details on their duties or recent missions, or personal details such as names, phone numbers, or addresses.

It should go without saying how dangerous this practice is given the types of missions we accomplish everyday, and we need to ensure we stay ever vigilant regarding OPSEC and the dangers of sharing potentially sensitive information over extremely unsecured mediums.

One specific site that has attracted special attention is "Air Force Together We Served." Thousands of Air Force members subscribe to this site. While it presents itself as a "Members Only" and a "secure" Web site, it is not an official Air Force approved site.

Other potentially dangerous sites and programs include MySpace, Facebook, and Instant Messaging programs. Please note this is not a warning that these sites are a threat by their existence, but more that the danger exists for unsuspecting personnel to share potentially damaging information. Please continue practicing good OPSEC and employing sound decisions when dealing with any information that may harm our Airmen or our missions.

To keep in contact with family and friends, the Air Force does have an approved Instant Messenger program, AFIM, which can be located in the upper right toolbar of the Air Force Portal.
