FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. -- There are only six weeks left until the intramural volleyball league playoffs. Some teams seem more excited than others about the playoffs, however all teams appear to be having fun.
Below are the standings for the ten teams playing, with a total of 96 players, including coaches. Team standings are current as of April 14.
Team Won/Lost
92nd Medical Group 5/1
336th Training Group 4/0
92nd Logistics Readiness Squadron 4/0
92nd Civil Engineer Squadron 2/2
92nd Mission Support Squadron 1/1
92nd Security Forces Squadron 1/1
92nd Communications Squadron 1/3
92nd Operations Group 1/3
92nd Services Squadron 0/4
92nd Air Refueling Wing staff 0/4
Having only approximately eight players on the 92nd SVS team hasn't stopped them yet from showing up ready to play. Though they have had a tough season, their morale has not suffered. Airman 1st Class Riquette Wynter, head coach states "just playing boosts our morale." She does have one goal though, and that is "to win one game, at least." Every player on the 92nd SVS team works together, which leads Airman Wynter to believe that they play better together because they "know each other's ways," and "what buttons not to push."
The 92nd SFS team is lead by Staff Sgt. Eric Gustafson, an Air National Guardsman who has been working on Fairchild since 2001. He plays with the team whenever he is not deployed, and this year he was named the head coach. The 92nd SFS team has a hard time with consistency of players due to the long hours they work on a day to day basis. However, the league does have a players pool so the team has not had to forfeit a game due to lack of players. Many play to have fun, but Sergeant Gustafson confessed, he plays volleyball because it gets him to the gym and helps him to "keep in shape for softball."
Another team that has a hard time filling the roster is the 92nd OG. They have about 10 players who make it when they can, but, due to not being part of the Air Expeditionary Force, their deployment schedule makes it hard to be consistent with players. 1st Lt. John Rego stated that is why they have a group team instead of squadron teams. Lieutenant Rego is another one that goes out to have fun. He stated, "It's about learning, not just winning." Having a group-level team also gives the members from each squadron a "chance to intermingle."
The schedule has had a few changes, but the playoffs are still scheduled for May 26-30. Below is the schedule for the upcoming weeks. Come out and support your team.
