Fairchild was recognized as the winner of the Business Category Volunteer of the Year Award after being nominated by Rod Wieber, director of donor and community relations for 2nd Harvest Inland Northwest.

Chief Master Sgt. Paul Sikora, 92nd Air Refueling Wing command chief, Capt. Jennifer Schoffstall, 509th Weapons Squadron, and Tech. Sgt. Melva Stith, 509th Weapons Squadron, accepted the award at the 26th annual Volunteer of the Year Awards luncheon held April 16 at the Spokane Convention Center.

The award was presented in recognition of the 300 Fairchild Airmen who supported a food collection in the community through the 2nd Harvest Inland Northwest Food Bank. The "Take a Bite Out of Hunger" fundraiser was a major event that was a great success due to the volunteers that helped set up, buss tables, clean up and provided a variety of other services that were asked of them during the event.

Along with volunteering with the 2nd Harvest, members of Team Fairchild continuously donate their time and effort to the surrounding communities through many different types of volunteer work.

"We've got over 3,000 enlisted here on the installation, and not only do they go to war and serve their country and deploy away from their families, but when they're back here at their home station they're extremely involved, viable members of their communities," said Chief Sikora. Awards are abundant, as well as phone calls and e-mails, talking about the things our folks are doing in the community.

From the 2nd Harvest Food Bank to Toys for Tots to Big Brothers, Big Sisters and every other organization through which Fairchild Airmen volunteer, it is clear that members of Team Fairchild take pride in doing their part in the community.
