Highlighted Events: June 28-29: Spokane Hoopfest '08 More than 3,000 volunteers are needed to make the Hoopfest tournament a success and the comittee is now taking names. There are numerous opportunities at Hoopfest; the most crucial volunteer is the Hoopfest Court Monitor. Hoopfest will honor a two-day commitment as a Court Monitor with NIKE shorts, shoes, monitor shirt, and hat. To register visit www.spokanehoopfest.net or download the application form. Box 599, Spokane, WA 99210, or FAX to: (509) 624-0868 Upcoming Events: May 12-16: National Bike to Work Week Members of Fairchild are encouraged to bicycle to work with groups of friends and co-workers during National Bike to Work Week May 12 - 16. A prize drawing will be offered to participating members for every day they ride their bicycle to work. Prizes will include a CamelBak Mule 100 ounce hydration pack valued at $85, a portable tire pump and a bicycle multi tool. Entries must be received by May 16. May 16: Police Week display The 92nd Security Forces Squadron will be conducting displays at the Base Exchange in observance of Police Week May 16 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. A Security Forces vehicle display, local law enforcement display and Security Forces history display will be available. There will also be a K-9 detection demo. May 22: Summer Fun and Safety Fair Safety Day is May 22 and the wing safety office is hosting a Summer Fun and Safety Fair at the Deel Community Center from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Attendance is open to all active-duty personnel, dependants and civilians. Booths from the base and the local community will be on display. Demonstrations by the 92nd Security Forces military working dogs and the 36th Rescue Flight are also scheduled. Volunteers from the Safe Kids of Spokane Child Passenger Safety Team will also be available to perform child safety seat checks. May 22: America's Kids Run and Armed Forces 5K Run On the corner of Doolittle Street and Castle Street at 4 p.m. May 22, the America's Kids Run and Armed Forces 5K Run will begin. There are no registration fees; however, children 5 and up must sign up for the America's Kids Run by May 19 at the Youth Center. Free T-shirts are available for both events on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information on the America's Kids Run contact the Youth Center at 247-5601. May 30: Free blood pressure and body fat screening The Commissary will offer free blood pressure and body fat screenings May 30 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. May 31: Shopping trip to Seattle The 92nd Services Squadron is hosting breakfast at Club Fairchild and a round-trip, luxury bus ride to Pike's Market Place May 31 for $50 per person. The race is open to Fairchild community 16 and older. William Moncrease 93 Airman 1st Class Danielle Gadeberg 96 SCOPE Basic and Citizens-On-Patrol certification class Fairchild's next Sheriff Community Oriented Policing Effort Basic and Citizens-On-Patrol certification class will be held in the 92nd Security Forces classroom May 20 from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. This class will certify attendees to be volunteers for the Spokane County Sheriff's Department. Upon completion you will receive a Sheriff's Office Photo identification card to be used as credentials when you are performing SCOPE related duties. You must register prior to attending the course. Conflict Management Class This class is for those interested in understanding conflict management styles and the vital role of communication. The class is open to all military and civilian personnel. Listening Skills This class is for those interested in learning the essentials of listening skills, saving time and resources, and avoiding challenges by using better communication skills. Study Skills Class This seminar is designed for those returning to school after a long absence. The primary focus is to introduce students to time-management skills. Other modules include memory, reading for comprehension and test-taking tips. Students will also assess their learning styles, establish goals and make a study calendar. Classes are scheduled July 9, Aug. 13 and Sept. 10. Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded to the top 25 entries. To enter, write a 500-word, or less, essay on the topic: "The most important person in my life." Submit the entry to Club Fairchild no later than July 1. Only one essay per eligible person will be accepted. Final scholarship awards will be announced by Sept. 19. For GED, high school completion and English as a Second Language classes call 533-4600. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Registration for the summer semester runs through May 16. Classes include Macroeconomics and Human Factors in Aviation Safety. The graduate class this semester will be the Air Transportation System, a core class for the Master of Science degree. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University offers bachelor's and master's degree programs and an AMT Type 65 certificate for those seeking a Federal Aviation Administration Airframe and Powerplant license. Instead, History credits will be given as Social Science credits. Call 244-2020 for information. - Park University offers a 15-credit-hour scholarship for non-military spouses and dependents of active-duty personnel. For more information call the Park University office at 244-2020. - Park University Fairchild Campus Center will offer the Writing Competency Test May 20 and 27; and June 3, 10, 17 and 24. Students should sign up at least two terms prior to taking EN306/CJ441/CJ450. A passing WCT score is a prerequisite to register for EN306/CJ441/CJ450 and a graduation requirement. The WCT results will not be available until at least three weeks after test date. Failure to comply with this requirement could delay graduation because the requirement will not be waived. Call the Fairchild Campus Center at 244-2020 to schedule an appointment to take the mandatory WCT. - On-site and Internet classes for summer (Term V) begin June 2. Registration is in progress for both online and onsite courses. Be sure to register early for Internet classes.
