The following is a question to the 92nd Air Refueling Wing commander submitted by a member of Team Fairchild or the local community.

Question:
I have an issue with the driving route to the survival side of the base. Since the construction began and the main road was closed, an alternate road was created on the outside of the airfield fence line. I'm unsure if you've driven this road as of late, but the conditions of the fatigued pavement are atrocious. I understand the delay in fixing a matter such as if the roadway was scarcely used, but this isn't the case. The roadway is the only means of access to the survival side of base. I am sure hundreds of vehicles, both private and government owned, have to pass through this mess on a daily basis -- sometimes three - four times a day. With the amount of traffic, not only is it damaging the roadways even more, but it's causing damage to vehicles. What is the status of this project? Are there plans for the roadway to be repaired or for an alternate means of access? Thank you for your time.

Answer:
We understand your frustration relative to the condition of Sherman Road where it passes in front of the new Armed Forces Reserve Center. This section of road is part of a realignment that was necessary to accommodate the AFRC. The road will receive a new asphalt overlay as part of the construction contract. Weather permitting, the paving is scheduled to be accomplished the week of June 9.

This section of road will be closed during the placement of new asphalt. During that time, a detour will be provided through the Sports Range. Please keep in mind that the Sports Range will stay operational, so vehicle operators will need to drive cautiously. A 20 mph speed limit will be posted for the area. Additionally, once the paving is complete, the area in front of the AFRC will still be designated as a construction zone. The 20 mph speed limit will remain in effect until the construction is complete to ensure everyone's safety.
