Upcoming Events: Aug. 9 - 10: Airshow childcare Airmen on official duty during the airshow who do not have a spouse to care for their children will be provided free childcare through the Extended Duty Care program. For those working booths in support of private organizations and fundraising, charges will apply based on the individual provider's rates. Aug 9 - 10: Services airshow closures The Arts and Crafts Center, Auto Hobby Center, Wood Craft Center, Engraving and Frame Shop, Outdoor Recreation Center, Sports Range, Club Fairchild, Funspot, Veterinary Clinic, Deel Community Center, Child Development Center, Youth Center, Teen, and Pre-Teen Center and Library will be closed during Skyfest 2008 Aug. 9 - 10. Various other 92nd Services Squadron facilities will remain open during the airshow. Aug. 10: Catholic Mass The Base Chapel will offer a 6:30 a.m. Catholic Mass Aug. 10. Regular services will still be offered and are as follows: 9 a.m. Protestant Contemporary Service, 10:30 a.m. Catholic Mass and 1:30 p.m. Protestant Gospel Service. Contact Chaplin (Maj.) Aug. 15: Fairchild Icon Finals On Aug. 15 selected finalists will compete for "Best Entertainer" during Fairchild Icon at Club Fairchild at 5 p.m. The first, second and third place finalists will win $500, $300 and $200 prizes, respectively. The winner of the event will compete for the title of Air Mobility Command Icon at Scott Air Force Base, Ill., an all-expenses paid trip, and the opportunity to win $1,000 cash. Aug. 15: Right Start briefing reschedule Due to the upcoming airshow, the Right Start newcomer's orientation briefing scheduled for Aug. 8 has been rescheduled to 8 a.m. Aug. 15 at Club Fairchild. Ongoing Notifications: Skyfest 2008 shuttle bus schedule The 92nd Logistic Readiness Squadron will provide the following shuttle bus service during the airshow: Bus Stop One: Parade Ground at corner of Arnold Street and Hansel Avenue Bus Stop Two: Corner of Eaker Street and Kamiakin Trail Skyfest Entry Control Point One Skyfest Entry Control Point Two Bus Stop Three: Skyfest parking lot entrance at Building 2163 - the Glass House Bus Stop Four: Corner of Arizona Boulevard and O'Malley Avenue Each stop will be serviced approximately every 15 minutes and is open to all Skyfest spectators and Fairchild residents. Skyfest 2008 traffic information The Inland Northwest Skyfest 2008 will be held Aug. 9 - 10 at Fairchild. The base will be open to the public 9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. each day. During these two days the base populace can anticipate very heavy traffic volume. Individuals participating in festivities, as well as base housing residents, are encouraged to plan ahead to avoid extended delays. Washington State Patrol will control traffic outside of Fairchild's gateways. The on-base traffic plan may impact your access. To access other areas on base (to include housing, the Base Exchange, the Commissary, etc.) you must have a non-expired military identification card and valid base decal. Airmen will be posted at traffic control points to enforce the traffic plan. The main gate will be the primary entry and exit for base personnel and visiting guests. Traffic exiting the main gate will only be able to turn right onto Highway 2. Graham Gate will be open to performers, handicapped individuals, recreational vehicles, media personnel, distinguished visitors and vendors. All traffic departing Graham Gate at Highway 2 must turn left. No vehicles, with the exception of emergency vehicles and personnel residing between the two gates departing Graham Gate, will be allowed to turn right. Thorpe Road and Rambo Gate will remain open only for emergency vehicles and personnel working or residing on the 336th Training Group side of the base. Yoga class at the Family Oasis There will be a free yoga class offered at the Family Oasis every Wednesday at 7 p.m. All skill levels are welcome to attend. Sign up through Oct. 15 and pay no dues for the first six months. One thousand dollars will be given to the squadron with the greatest number of sign-ups; squadrons with the highest percentage of members participating in the FAN Club will win $1,000; and new members will be entered into a $1,000 drawing and will receive a $100 scratch ticket. Airman and Family Readiness Center position The Airman and Family Readiness Center is seeking a motivated non-commissioned officer in the grade of technical sergeant to fill a readiness position by Oct 1. The flight chief is responsible for all aspects of operations; implementing policies, programs and procedures; and providing leadership, guidance and direction to the faculty support staff and students. The flight chief also supervises and/or evaluates a faculty of five and is responsible for training the faculty. He or she interfaces with Air Force and civic organizations to enhance support for enlisted professional military education, recruits and selects faculty; manages all resource programs and plans, manages, and hosts graduation ceremonies. Practices are held at the indoor pool; all levels of experience are welcome and swim all year round. The Aqua Aviators Novice Swim Team novice swim team meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4 - 5 p.m. Participants are 18 years and under. Cost per month is $25. The Masters Swim Team meets Monday and Wednesday from 5 - 6:30 p.m. Participants are over the age of 18. The team is free. Monthly swim meets are held. Leadership Skills Class Develop your leadership skills through free Force Development Education courses every month at the Base Education Center. The class is open to all military and civilian personnel; however, some courses are limited to certain ranks. Courses offered: Listening Skills - Involves the essentials of listening skills, saving time and resources, and avoiding challenges by using better communication skills. Study Skills - This seminar is designed for military, civilians or dependents returning to college after a long absence. The primary focus of study skills is to introduce individuals to time management awareness to help balance the demands of school and working life. Other modules include memory, reading for comprehension and test-taking tips. In this course the student will assess their learning style, make a study calendar and establish goals. Classes are scheduled Aug. 13 and Sep. 10. They will be held at the Base Education Center in Room 105 from 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with lunch from noon - 1 p.m. Southern Illinois University Carbondale Southern Illinois University Carbondale has an accelerated format degree in which the major can be completed in as little as one year. The degree is accomplished on an alternating weekend schedule that takes up one to two weekends per month. Classes begin Aug. 23. Some of the benefits of this program include: - No Associates degree required to begin the program. - Up to 44 semester hours granted for individual work experience and technical training (equivalent to about 15 college courses). - Only 14 SIUC General Education courses required - you may already have some of these completed. - Civilians are welcome to attend - full financial assistance is available to qualified students. - Earn a Bachelor of Science degree In Workforce Education and Development SIUC is a Research-One Institution.
