Donate blood, save lives Published Feb. 19, 2009 FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. -- Have you ever received blood? Do you know someone that has? Chances are you do. Whether they have been in a car accident or have a long-term medical condition, people of all ages and from all walks of life often need blood to save their life. By giving blood one time you can save up to three lives. On Feb. 27 the Inland Northwest Blood Center will be at the Base Exchange between 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. You can make an appointment ahead of time for quicker service or you can show up any time during the hours for walk-in service. If you have never given blood before, you have nothing to fear. The actual donation portion usually takes no more than 10 minutes and for most people is no more uncomfortable than a shot. As an added benefit, the blood center staff will give you cookies and juice afterwards, unlike a trip to the immunization clinic. Make sure to eat and drink water prior to donating. All are welcome to donate blood - military, civilian, dependents, retirees, first-timers and repeat donators. To give blood you must weigh at least 110 pounds. 16- and 17-year-olds can donate blood with a parent's consent. All donors who sign up ahead of time will be entered into the INBC's promotional drawing - a trip to Las Vegas for the Academy of Country Music Awards. To schedule an appointment or to ask questions contact Capt. Aaron Wilson at 247-4082 or e-mail him at aaron.wilson@fairchild.af.mil.
