Security Forces named Hometown Hero Published Oct. 23, 2009 By Senior Airman Emerald Ralston 92nd Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. -- Staff Sgt. Robert Jones, 92nd Security Forces Squadron, was named a Red Cross Hometown Hero for Fairchild and will be recognized in a ceremony downtown Nov. 12. During what started out as a normal day on gate-guard duty, a retiree pulled into Sergeant Jones' lane and informed him he had just been stung by a bee and was very allergic. The man told Sergeant Jones he was going to pull over and use his epinephrine pen, but asked him to keep an eye on him in case something went wrong. "After the man pulled over, he screamed 'call 911' - apparently his epi pen had expired," said Sergeant Jones. "I rushed over to him and he started going into shock. After about a minute he went into shock and lost consciousness. I radioed the desk and they called for the emergency responders. After about two minutes, he stopped breathing. I started CPR until the rescue vehicles arrived. They took over from there." Sergeant Jones' quick thinking and response resulted in probably saving the man's life. "I don't remember feeling panicky, I just remember thinking 'if I don't do something now, it won't be good,'" said Sergeant Jones. "I did everything I could and at least I did the right thing. Thankfully he made it. The next day he and his son came through the gate and thanked me. They were very appreciative. That was the best reward - just seeing him alive and okay." Sergeant Jones also credits the quick response of the other security forces members at the gate that day and the medical team that responded.
