As the temperature changes, snow threatens, and the last few leaves fall, our focus inescapably turns to the rapidly approaching holidays. It is the time of year we set aside for family, friends, and reflection on what is most important in our lives.

The tradition of Thanksgiving reminds us each November of the settlers who came to the shores of America to build a new society. They were full of hope, pride, and the promise of freedom.

Unfortunately, these very same hard-won freedoms are now under assault. As we continue to fight the war on terror, ongoing combat ops will keep us all very busy for a long time to come. What I would ask each of you to do this holiday season, is take a few minutes to reflect on what we are all fighting for: family, friends, and the freedoms we simply all too often take for granted.

Although they don't wear an Air Force uniform, we must never forget the extraordinarily real sacrifices our families make so we can continue to serve. Their strength and courage is simply invaluable. What a great time to thank them for all they do for you and the nation!

So this Thanksgiving, maximize your time with family and friends, take care of the families of our deployed Airmen, and those new Airmen who may be away from home for the very first time. Most of all keep our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines in harm's way in your thoughts and prayers.
