What do actor John Travolta, Air Force Academy football coach Troy Calhoun and the Jazz Age have in common?

While you ponder that question, let's shift gears and talk about the cost of a college education. The College Board estimates that the average college education at a four year institution costs $28,000. That's not counting room and board, books, lab fees, etc.

To offset those costs there are grants and scholarships, which is where the Officers' Spouses' Club at Fairchild can help. Each year the OSC gives out scholarships to dependents of active duty and guard members of all branches of the military from around Spokane. Spouses and graduating high school seniors have received approximately $48,000 in scholarships over the past three years, helping dozens of military dependents begin or complete their degrees.

Now, have you figured out what John Travolta, Troy Calhoun and the Jazz Age have in common and how that relates to funding a college education? The answer is both men have donated items to the 2010 OSC Scholarship Auction which has a "The Roaring '20's" theme! This annual OSC scholarship auction is the source for all the scholarship money the OSC grants to students.

Following social time and a dinner catered by Luigi's Italian Restaurant, celebrity auctioneers Dave Cotton and George Maupin from Q6 and Col. Timothy Bush, 92nd Air Refueling Wing vice commander, will keep attendees entertained as they bid on some great items and help raise money for scholarships at the same time. And there are many, many great items on the block - music, movies, sports and theater tickets and memorabilia; hotel stays; restaurant certificates; spa and salon packages, and the list goes on.

The auction will take place at the Deel Community Center on Feb. 26 beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25 and are available through Feb. 19 from Michelle at reservations@fairchildosc.com or by calling 290-5313. We'll be puttin' on the Ritz, so get your glad rags on, grab your dough, jump in your jalopy and come on over for a lollapalooza with the flyboys and their dolls...it'll be the cat's meow, and that's no bull!
