Home-Based Job Program coming next week Published April 20, 2011 By Scott King 92nd Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. -- The Airman and Family Readiness Center will host the Home-Based Career & Telework Job Development Program April 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The purpose of the training is to provide resources and strategies for job seekers to find "legitimate" home-based jobs and freelance projects on the Internet. The program will be presented by Staffcentrix, a work at home company, who has been featured on ABC News 20/20, The Dr. Oz Show, The Tyra Banks Show, Today Show, Good Morning America and CNN. They have also been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Business Week and Consumer's Digest. According to Christine Durst, Staffcentrix Co-Founder, "The researchers who put together our weekly telework jobs bulletin report a 61-to-1 'scam' ratio. That is, for every 62 jobs they screen, 61 are deemed 'scams' and only one is considered a reliable, appropriate job lead. Our goal is to help people who would like to work from home find that 'one' among the many." The AFR&C is hoping for maximum participation for this program. "I absolutely think anyone from Fairchild who attends will benefit from this," said Ms. Maureen Hartford, AFR&C community readiness consultant. "Whether work-from-home or traditional, the person most likely to get hired is the one who can best market themselves as the ideal candidate. Attendees will learn how to prepare and market themselves for a job search with home-based employers." The six-hour program will include information on how to find companies that routinely hire home-based workers; customize resumes to make them more attractive to remote or "virtual" employers; work effectively with children in the house; and understand the difference between working as an employee and as an independent contractor. The program is ideal for military spouses, transitioning personnel and service-disabled veterans. "This is a rare opportunity for Fairchild. Many people here may want to work from home, for a variety of reasons. This class will provide them the resources to develop the skills necessary for success," Ms. Hartford said. "It will also teach about work-from-home scams and how to avoid them. Having this knowledge may allow attendees to know which work-from-home opportunities to trust, and allow them to proceed with confidence." The program mirrors what some of our national leaders are advocating for military families. "This is yet another great resource to develop career opportunities for our military spouses," Ms. Hartford explained. "This goes hand-in-hand with First Lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden's focus on addressing the employment and educational needs of military personnel and their families." The program is funded by a grant from the Air Force Aid Society, therefore it is offered at no cost to attendees. Seating is limited to 90 participants. People interested in the program must register in advance at the A&FRC or call 247-2246. "We are very excited about the opportunity to offer this to Team Fairchild," Ms. Hartford said. "No training on this topic is regularly offered on base or in the local community - so we highly encourage people to attend if they are thinking about this type of career."
