Why pay to have your taxes filed? With one phone call to Fairchild Air Force Base's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance center, volunteers are standing by to help file returns for free.

"At the Fairchild tax center, the volunteers are all members of the Department of Defense community, so you can count on them to be friendly, dependable and flexible while preparing your return," said Capt. Jessica Jacquay, Fairchild's tax assistance site coordinator.

The tax center, located in building 2145 at 1 W. Arnold St., will be open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

According to Jacquay, there are several items people should bring with them to their appointment, including:

· A copy of your 2011 tax return
· Proof of identification for yourself and spouse, and social security cards (including dependents)
· All forms W-2 and 1099, including information for all deductions and credits
· Personal bank account information for direct deposit

"There are some tax issues that are beyond the scope of VITA tax center services," said Jacquay. "If anyone anticipates any complicated issues they should discuss that with a representative when they call to make an appointment."

Certified volunteers are available by appointment only. Please call 247-1040 to be matched with a volunteer who has the expertise to address unique tax situations.
