April is Alcohol Awareness Month

FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash -- For many people, alcohol minimally impacts everyday life when used responsibly in social situations. Responsible drinking can be defined as alcohol use that does not negatively impact one's family, work or health.

Alcohol Awareness Month is an opportunity to raise awareness of the pitfalls of alcohol misuse and to encourage healthy, safe choices.

It is important to be aware of the reasons behind consumption. Using it to manage or mask difficult emotions can and often leads to negative outcomes, said Maj. Kim Sunderland, Mental Health Flight commander.

Patterns of possible alcohol misuse or abuse include:
· Drinking alone when feeling sad or angry
· Being late for work because of drinking
· Drinking worrying family members
· Forgetting what happened while drinking
· Headaches or hangovers after drinking

"Anonymous self-assessments are available online at www.DrinkingIQ.org," said Senior Airman Erin Dunn, a mental health technician. "It helps provide initial feedback regarding your alcohol use."

Ways to be responsible include:
· Always having a plan
· Finding a designated driver
· Limiting drinks and sticking to that limit
· Calling Airman Against Drunk Driving or a cab
· Not letting friends drive buzzed or drunk

An Alcohol Screening event will be held April 11, from 11 a.m. to 3p.m at the Funspot.

"The event is for individuals to find out where they are with their alcohol use and if it has reached a harmful level," said Dunn. "We will provide education, information and resources on responsible drinking."
