Team Fairchild is built upon the efforts of all its Airmen, but not all go through basic military training; the vital civilian component is primarily sourced from federal employment programs and listings.

Civilian government employment positions can be applied for on the USAjobs website, but there are other lesser known options available such as the Pathways Program.

The Pathways Program may offer a great chance for students. Established by former President Barack Obama in 2010, the program is a college-to-federal employment listing of jobs that college students and recent college graduates can apply for in order to transition directly to federal employment.

“The Pathways Program is a great way to get a taste of federal employment that can help secure long-term positions,” Martin said. “After all, we’re always looking to add to the great team Fairchild has. I love it here; it feels safe to work on base and my coworkers are amazing.”

Pathways has three programs: internship, recent graduates and presidential management fellows.

Internship Program
Those currently in high school, a qualifying trade school or pursuing a college degree can apply for a paid internship at a federal agency to help explore career options while in school.

Recent Graduates Program
This program offers career development training and mentorship to those with a qualifying degree or certificate. Civilian applicants have two years post-graduation to apply and veteran applicants have six years post-graduation to apply.

Presidential Management Fellows Program
The Presidential Management Fellows Program is a prestigious leadership development training opportunity dating back to 1977 and seeks the best applicants with advanced graduate level degrees. The competitive, two-year long federal fellowship is available to applicants within a year of graduation and no later than two years post-graduation.

“There are a lot of opportunities for civilians if you know where to look,” said Kaylynn Martin, 92nd Force Support Squadron civilian personal officer. “At Fairchild, we also have a Summer Hiring Program for seasonal positions in addition to the Pathways Program, both of which can serve as experience towards a permanent government position.”

Go to: www.afciviliancareers.com and www.USAJOBS.gov and use the search term ‘Pathways’ with a location of your choice to find Pathways Program opportunities and Summer Hiring Program positions at Fairchild Air Force Base or federal facilities in your area.
