Today marks the 61st anniversary of the mighty KC-135 Stratotanker being delivered to the United States Air Force! The Stratotanker was delivered to the 93rd Air Refueling Squadron, then assigned to Castle Air Force Base, California. The 93rd ARS went on to establish two official world records: distance in a straight line without refueling, 10,229.3 miles, from Tokyo, Japan to Lajes, Azores; and a speed record of 492.262 miles per hour from Tokyo to Washington D.C. in 13 hours, 45 minutes and 46.5 seconds.
