1/29/2013 - FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash.  -- Anyone who ever wished there was an app to find out what's going on at Fairchild Air Force Base can wish no more. Fairchild has joined the ranks of a dozen other bases that have implemented such technology during the past eight months.

The free application for smart phones and tablet computers called My Military Communities, or MyMC2, is available through both the Android Market and Apple's App Store. It was developed by the 375th Communication Support Squadron web application development team at Scott AFB, Ill. The app pulls and consolidates event listings from organizational Facebook pages officially associated with their respective base.

The key is for Facebook administrators to leverage their pages' event function in order for events show up in the MyMC2 application, said Capt. Kenneth Scholz, chief, 92nd Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs.

"With the help of the base's Community Action Information Board, we were able to add Fairchild's Facebook pages to this application. If there's an official or base private organization who would like to have their events featured, they just need to get in touch with the public affairs office to be added," said Scholz.

At Fairchild, a collection of helping agencies and recreational groups are already utilizing this tool simply by continuing to update their Facebook pages.

"It's catching fire," said Sueann Herkel, marketing director, 92nd Force Support Squadron. "Our squadron has activity managers who want to make sure they're getting their information on MyMC2. The best part is all of Fairchild's events are co-located and it's free."

The app is especially useful for newcomers to a base, said Master Sgt. Delbert Freeborn, 375th CSPTS project manager. He explained how the app opens up to a main page that lists the next five events available at each base. Users then have the option to narrow or expand their search by organizational or event type categories.

"It was developed for Air Force and Department of Defense wide use, so if you move to a new base or travel somewhere for work, you could open this app and view the list of events for that base. It's ready for everybody," said Freeborn.
